Porcelain Crowns (Caps)

Dental crowns (or caps) are custom-fit to cover the entire biting surface and sides of the tooth. Crowns protect your tooth and restore biting and chewing function.

The Advantages of Porcelain Crowns

Porcelain crowns are tooth-colored and shaped to effectively match your smile. These sturdy and natural-looking restorations are capable of providing years of service. As with most dental restorations, regular follow-up visits and occasional replacements are essential in maintaining attractive, long-lasting results.

Reasons for crowns:

  • Broken or fractured teeth
  • Dental decay
  • Teeth that have received root canal treatment
  • Replacement of large or damaged fillings
  • Enhancement of dental aesthetics

What does getting a crown involve?

A crown procedure usually requires two appointments.   On the first appointment, the dentist will prepare the tooth by removing any decay and shaping the surface to properly fit the crown. The dentist will take several highly accurate molds (or impressions) that will be used to create your custom crown and a temporary crown. The temporary crown will be placed with temporary cement and will stay on your tooth approximately two weeks until your new crown is fabricated.

At your second appointment your temporary crown will be removed, the tooth will be cleaned, and your new crown will be carefully placed to ensure the spacing and bite are accurate.

Good oral hygiene practices, eating habits and regular dental visits will aid in the life of your new crown.
